Dartmouth loses to Harvard 4-1

Harvard got out to a 2-0 lead, and never trailed as they ended up winning 4-1. Jessiman got Dartmouth's lone goal in the 2nd to briefly pull the team within 1 and rouse the standing room only crowd of 4100+ in attendance, but Harvard answered later in the 2nd and put it away in the 3rd.

Dartmouth hosts Brown tomorrow night in the last regular season home game of the year. A win will clinch home ice for the first round, and move them at least temporarily back into 4th place, which would give them a first round bye.

No more details from me tonight, I'm in no mood to provide objective analysis. I'll just echo what the student section started chanting late in the game. "F*** you Harvard."

Michigan Case

Dartmouth signs an amicus curiae brief supporting Michigan's position.

"What we really wanted to comment on in the case . . . was to support the principle underlying the Bakke decision, which was that race is one of many characteristics of an individual that can be taken into account in college admissions," Princeton president Shirley Tilghman said.

Re: Tinkering with free speech

Over on Free Dartmouth (from what?), left-wing loony Tim Waligore mentions this story on a high school student in Michigan who was told to take off a t-shirt with a picture of Bush that said "international terrorist." Sadly, Tim, this sort of thing may not have the sort of constitutional protection it should; for years, the courts have consistently rescinded the rights of young people, almost to the point where they have free expression rights only at the whim of school administrators. It really is an outrage. Mind you, this isn't just my opinion; this is also the opinion of Greg Lukianoff, FIRE's legal director and an honest-to-goodness lawyer.

Okay, it's really only my opinion because Greg says it's the case... but I trust him. He's such a nice boy.

By the way, some may have missed the pun in Tim's title; it refers to a 1969 Supreme Court decision in the case of Tinker v. Des Moines, in which a student's wearing of a black armband to protest the Vietnam War was declared constitutionally protected expression.

Eugene Volokh seems to think that
the t-shirt is constitutional. Let's just hope the courts agree.

"End Discrimination Now"

I just saw a girl putting up a poster in the Hop. She has beef with the American Red Cross for not accepting blood donations from men who have engaged in homosexual sex since 1977.

Student Body President responds

I e-mailed Janos Marton '04 and asked him if the rumor is true.

His response:

"Well, they [the Student Assembly] wont 'pass it' [the resolution], but I promised I would let it be brought to the floor only if at least 60% of Dartmouth students oppose the war. I personally have no illusions that a Dartmouth SA resolution will stop the war, but the precedent for activism in conjunction with other Ivy League schools is a good one. This topic will undoubtedly come up when all 8 Student Body Presidents meet this weekend. I think I picked that number because more than 50% of SA is against the war, most kids are fairly liberal, and it would have been a mistake to grossly misrepresent the campus (if that's what the numbers show)."

As promised

I mentioned this to some of you via e-mail yesterday.

Well here's the link to the Office of Public Affairs' announcement of Dartmouth's filing of a friend of the court brief regarding the Michigan matter. There you can also download the brief in pdf format.

Very nice

Bob Barr should be part of every joke. I'm surprised people outside of our circle even know who he is. Well, he is a former Congressman now, but I still give Dog Day props.

Throughout history, humanity has been plagued by questions. . .

Does life have a meaning?
Are we here for a reason?
If Russell Crowe and Georgia congressman Bob Barr adopted a child, would its last name be Crowe-Barr?

For answers and more, come see

SA rumor

I received a forwarded e-mail with the following text:

"a little inside information on the D poll:

if 60% of students vote no to war, student assembly will pass a resolution stating that the Dartmouth students are against war. the student govts of Cornell and Yale have done the same.

so ... don't forget to vote.

(ps - pass this on to those you think will vote "no")"
